I resented them for it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
So severely in fact that I didn\u2019t want to claim them as my parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s so funny now as a dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The imperfection of it all and the hoping and praying that my imperfections don\u2019t trigger a catalyst that creates long term damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As if our children couldn\u2019t possibly cope with our imperfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Man, we need help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To be completely knowledgeable of the non existence of perfection and act with certainty that everyone expects us to be perfect\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I underestimate my children\u2019s capacity to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My parents underestimated my capacity to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To carry the mantle of perfection requires a complete dismantling of your integrity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
An adoption of a permanent mask that while providing you the persona you wish for, slowly seeps poison into your bloodstream killing you with every deflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The poison causes us to hallucinate and fully embrace the persona\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe, I am perfect and everyone else is just wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What a prison perfection is. Rather the hopeless pursuit of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To willingly surrender your agency and compromise your authenticity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As humans we naturally repel perfection while at the same time, desiring to project it to anyone that will notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most times push on the door that says pull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I lose my glasses on top of my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I routinely have to remind myself \u201crighty tighty lefty loosey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I nod my head in agreement with you and I have no idea what you\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I almost set my house on fire because I forgot I had meat on the grill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have long since forgiven my parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I asked them why they felt the obligation to appear this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just like every good parent, they told me that they didn\u2019t want to let me down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Attempting to be perfect does just that…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let us down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because while you\u2019re so busy being perfect, I am left alone to navigate a world through my own imperfections with no North Star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Be open about your missteps, your wrong turns and outdated assumptions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Show your children, your friends, your team the capacity to evolve, to grow and to apologize when you\u2019re wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
